Exeter Castle is located in the heart of the city, just off the High Street. If you’re in Exeter already, it’s easy to find the castle on foot or by bike (the address is Castle Street, Exeter, EX4 3PU).
If you’re travelling from farther afield, Exeter Castle is also handy for Exeter Central railway station; if you plan to travel by car, please be aware that there is no car parking at the castle site, though there are several carparks throughout Exeter city centre (King William Street and Howell Road are the closest). Exeter’s excellent Park & Ride service operates from three sites just outside the city – park for free at your preferred location, then buy your ticket onboard the bus (click here to view parking sites and timetables).
Wheelchair Access is extremely limited internally. Step-free access is available to the courtyard, bar area and inside and outside disabled toilets. There will be two disabled toilets on site, one provided inside by the Castle and a portable hire provided by Greendale. Disabled parking: there is no parking available on-site. The closest disabled parking spaces are at Exeter Library, behind Boots on Bailey St and at the Howell Road car park.
Well-behaved dogs are welcome to join you at the Love Local Food Festival, however they will be allowed outside only. We’ll have free drinking water and treat tasters for them to enjoy!
Surrounded by parkland and nestled in the north-east corner of Exeter’s roman-built city walls, Exeter Castle has seen centuries of history come and go. From its beginnings as a fortified castle around a thousand years ago, its ancient walls have also been home to a county court and a gaol; the castle is even mentioned in Shakespeare’s play, Richard III, in reference to the monarch’s real-life visit to Exeter in 1483. Today, Exeter Castle is privately owned; the new owners’ stated aim is to ‘create a vibrant hub of art, music, food and drink, open to the public for the next thousand years’, and we’re delighted that our Love Local Food Festival will be part of this!
